Free weekly sessions in ensemble practice and theatre-making.

Our FREE weekly Hackney Workshops are designed as a supportive space for our MTW alumni community and young adults (18–30) interested in theatre-making, especially those with lived experience of migration.

Rooted in Foreign Affairs’ core practice of staging plays in translation and cross-cultural collaboration, these self-contained sessions offer an open space to test ideas and collaborate – workshops might explore ensemble work, adaptation, devising, playwriting, and dramaturgy, led by FA or by one of our associate artists.

A space for alumni and new faces alike. These workshops bring together MTW alumni looking to deepen their practice alongside artists and young adults joining us for the first time. Whether you’ve worked with us before or are completely new to Foreign Affairs, you are very welcome in the room.

The series is shaped as it goes. While the first four workshops are planned, the rest of the series is co-designed with you. This is an open, collaborative space to test ideas, suggest topics, and play with concepts – ideas you might want to carry into The December Gathering, our closing weekend in December.

Come to one, or come to all. Because space is limited, advance booking via Ticket Tailor is required, purely to help us manage room capacity. Each workshop is self-contained, so you don’t need to have attended before, or commit to attending others – sign up for single workshops or as many as you like; sign-up is rolling throughout the series. At booking, we’ll ask for your postcode to help us understand who we’re reaching.

To keep the room focused, supportive, and connected for everyone, access to these workshops is by invitation. Because sessions bring together people familiar with our work alongside those joining us for the first time, keeping booking by invitation allows us to know who’s in the room, welcome you properly, and manage capacity.

  • Worked with us before? Check your inbox – we’ve already emailed you your invite and direct booking link!
  • New to Foreign Affairs? Drop us a quick DM on Instagram or email us at team@foreignaffairs.org.uk with a short intro about yourself and why you’d like to join. We’ll send over full details and your booking link right away.

Cancellation policy
Please cancel at least 24 hours before a workshop if you can no longer attend, so we can offer your place to someone on the waitlist. We operate a two-strike policy: if you miss two workshops without cancelling in advance, you may lose the ability to book future workshops.

December gathering

Save the Date: Sat 5 & 6 Dec 2026

The autumn workshops build toward our closing weekend, coinciding with our end-of-year company gathering. Attending at least one autumn workshop automatically unlocks an invitation to the December weekend – no application or selection process needed.

Sat 5 Dec (Open Space): A chance to test, develop, or play with ideas in a supportive environment, with our Co-Artistic Directors and associate artists on hand to support. Nothing needs to be finished!

Sun 6 Dec (Company Gathering): Our annual end-of-year gathering with associates, friends, and family. There is an optional, low-pressure opportunity to share something from the autumn workshops if you’d like to.

Invitations and full details will go out to workshop participants in early November.

The Hackney Workshops – Make Theatre With FA are funded by TNL Community Fund.
